music we love – alabama shakes
This February feels like it’s barely begun and yet there has been many a surprise! First we experienced unseasonably warm weather, then surprise snow and now a brand new Alabama Shakes single.
“Don’t Wanna Fight” ushers in a new funky sound for the band’s sophomore album “Sound and Color.” We couldn’t be more excited about this album. The single kicks off with a searing high note from rocking front woman Brittany Howard, continuing to flow into the rhythmic hot guitar sound the band has become famous for. Only this time the sound is something a bit more mature, a little heavier but still bluesy and smooth.
Howard has never been one to shy away from the darker side of life, but on “Don’t Wanna Fight” we can really feel the tension between wanting to stay and needing to go. Howard’s always-on-point vocals nail the frustration of becoming fed up with the world around you. The lyrics push and pull between fighting while begging to throw in the towel. “Sound and Color” promises a funk and blues inspired sound while still staying true to the bands southern rock roots. If only we didn’t have to wait until April for the full album!
We at Sine Qua Non love and fiercely support female musicians, look no further than owner Laura Boton! Brittany Howard brings a breath of fresh air to the male-dominated world of rock and roll. Her natural brown curls always look like a crown of pure hair freedom when Howard takes the stage. Whether up in a bandanna, blown out, picked out or just hanging out– Howard knows how to confidently wear her hair. We have a lifelong love for Howard’s incredible musicianship and her rocking confidence!
If April is too long for you to wait for some Alabama Shakes goodness you can check them out at the Chicago Theatre on March 14th. We’ll be there for sure!
