music we love – sunflower bean
Sunflower Bean are the teenagers you aspired to be: aloof but down to Earth, cool but relatable with talent coming out of every pore. They embody all of the contradictions you spent your awkward teen years figuring out. Their attraction to doom metal and glam rock combined with their youthful energy create a unique sound, taking you into the past and future all at once.
Jacob Faber (drums), Julia Cumming (vox/bass), Nick Kivlen (vox/guitar) are three New York natives who were named, “The hardest working band in New York ” in 2014 by Oh My Rockness. Their hard work has paid off. Although Human Ceremony is their first album, the polished feel can be attributed to their 3 years of live shows. The title track “Human Ceremony” imagines a future where other beings are looking back on humans they way we study extinct animals. It sets the album on a path mediating on our future in the universe. Backed with dreamy guitars, synth and playful vocals, it isn’t hard to imagine the future with Sunflower Bean.
The band’s aesthetic is very youthful while clearly inspired by rock and roll history. The boys bounce easily between soft suits and classic t shirts while Julia skews more modern flower child. Nick and Jacob both sport curly manes, with ringlets galore! Julia is 100% modern with a short platinum bob. Sine Qua Non knows curly hair can be totally rock and roll. If your hair isn’t rocking as much as you’d like, come visit us! We’ll listen to Sunflower Bean and contemplate the universe while giving you an amazing cut.
